Do I need any previous experience with AI?
Not at all. This course is designed specifically for educators who are new to generative AI or feel overwhelmed by the rapid pace of change. We begin with the fundamentals and explain everything in clear, accessible language—no technical background required.
Is this course focused on higher education?
Yes. AI Foundations for Educators was created specifically for post-secondary educators. Every example, discussion, and ethical consideration is grounded in the realities of teaching and learning in colleges and universities.
That said, educators working in K–12 and other educational settings will also find the course valuable. While the examples are drawn from higher education, the principles of AI literacy, ethical decision-making, prompting, and responsible AI use are applicable across a wide range of educational contexts.
Will this course teach me how to use ChatGPT?
Yes—but it goes far beyond ChatGPT.
You'll learn practical prompting techniques that help you communicate effectively with generative AI, regardless of the platform you're using. We'll also compare today's leading AI tools—including ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Claude, Gemini, and others—so you can understand their strengths, limitations, and the situations where each is most useful.
Rather than focusing on a single tool, this course helps you build lasting AI literacy. You'll develop the skills and judgment to evaluate new AI tools as they emerge and confidently choose the right one to support your teaching practice.
Will this course become outdated as AI changes?
No. While we'll introduce today's leading AI tools, this course is built around the enduring principles of AI literacy rather than the ever-changing features of specific platforms.
Technology will continue to evolve, but understanding how generative AI works, how to evaluate new tools, write effective prompts, and make informed ethical decisions will remain valuable long after individual applications change.
To ensure the course remains relevant, we also review and update the content on a monthly basis, incorporating the latest research, emerging best practices, and significant developments in AI for teaching and learning.
How long does the course take to complete?
The course includes seven self-paced modules. Most educators complete the course in approximately 10 hours, but you're welcome to move through the material at your own pace and revisit lessons whenever you need them.

Because this course is about building AI literacy, you'll see AI used in practical demonstrations, prompting activities, and examples throughout the course. We believe the best way to understand generative AI is to experience it in a guided, thoughtful, and ethical way.
We also believe in being transparent about our use of AI. Throughout the course, you'll find clear acknowledgements identifying when AI has been used to create or support content, including images, videos, tables, graphics, examples, and other learning resources. Our goal is not only to show you what's possible, but also to help you evaluate how AI might be used appropriately within your own educational context.
AI is never presented as a replacement for sound teaching, critical thinking, or professional judgment. Instead, we model responsible and transparent AI use while encouraging you to consider when AI adds value—and when it doesn't.
Our goal is to help you develop the confidence to make informed decisions about AI in your own teaching practice, regardless of how much or how little you ultimately choose to use it.
